How to reset Range Rover fuel gauge – when it’s not working

Filling your Range Rover up with fuel expecting to see your fuel indicator go up, but it’s not working – that’s when you need to know the simple steps on how to reset Range Rover fuel gauges.

Read on to learn how I fix this problem each time if there are no other underlying problems. You’ll be able to fix any inaccuracies or errors in your fuel gauge readings and ensure accurate information about your fuel levels.

What models are affected?

How the fuel gauge works

Your Range Rover’s fuel gauge is connected to a sending unit, which is responsible for measuring the amount of fuel in your vehicle’s tank.

The sending unit sends a signal to the fuel gauge, indicating the approximate fuel level.

However, sometimes, due to different reasons, this communication between the sending unit and the fuel gauge can become inaccurate or break down over time, which then gives you incorrect fuel level indications.

I’ve heard of guys with a Range Rover complain that their fuel pump is breaking down, well they think it is, but it turns out they’ve just been running their fuel level far below what fuel is actually in the tank!

How to reset Range Rover fuel gauge

Resetting the fuel gauge in your Range Rover is a relatively simple process. Follow the steps below to reset the fuel gauge and ensure accurate readings:

  1. Turn Off the Ignition: Start by turning off the ignition of your Range Rover. This will ensure your safety and prevent any electrical issues during the reset process.
  2. Locate the Reset Button: Next, locate the reset button on your Range Rover’s dashboard. The reset button is typically found near the fuel gauge and can have different appearances, depending on the model and year of your vehicle. Refer to your owner’s manual or consult with a Range Rover expert to find the exact location of the reset button in your specific model.
  3. Press and Hold the Reset Button: Once you’ve located the reset button, press and hold it for approximately 10-15 seconds. This duration may vary depending on the vehicle model. Holding the reset button will reset the fuel gauge and allow it to recalibrate itself.
  4. Release the Reset Button: After holding the reset button for the specified duration, release it. At this point, the fuel gauge in your Range Rover will reset itself and begin recalibrating the fuel level readings.
  5. Turn On the Ignition: After releasing the reset button, turn on the ignition of your Range Rover. This will initiate the recalibration process in the fuel gauge. Allow a few moments for the fuel gauge to stabilize and provide accurate readings.
  6. Verify Fuel Gauge Accuracy: Once the recalibration process is complete, check the fuel gauge readings to ensure they now reflect the correct fuel level in your Range Rover’s tank. The gauge should now provide accurate information, eliminating any previous inaccuracies or errors.

Other ways to reset Range Rover Fuel gauge

Disconnect battery

Disconnecting the Range Rover’s battery for a few minutes can sometimes reset certain electronic systems, including the fuel gauge.

This can also reset other settings and might trigger warning lights or other issues, so it’s important to proceed with caution and be prepared for potential consequences.

Use diagnostic tools

Some modern vehicles, including most Range Rovers, can be reset or calibrated using diagnostic tools.

These tools are often used by professional mechanics and can access various vehicle systems, including the fuel gauge calibration settings.

If you have an OBD tool, this could be an easy option.

Perform a drive cycle

Not all Range Rovers, especially the older models, will have this drive cycle built into them. Basically, it’s a driving condition model built to consider specific driving conditions to reset or recalibrate different systems, like the fuel gauge or tank.

The speed for this is approx 50-60mph at a consistent rev/consistent throttle for long spans of time, followed by high revs in a low gear.

FAQs

What should I do if the fuel gauge continues to display inaccurate readings?

If the fuel gauge continues to display inaccurate readings even after resetting it, there may be an underlying issue with the sending unit or other components of your Range Rover’s fuel system. In such cases, it is recommended to consult with a qualified Range Rover technician who can diagnose and resolve the issue effectively.

Will resetting the fuel gauge erase any other settings in my Range Rover?

No, resetting the fuel gauge should not erase any other settings or data in your Range Rover. The reset process specifically targets the fuel gauge and does not affect other vehicle settings.

  1. I have the exact dash you show in the image, and the same problem. is this a hidden reset button, the one that resets the trip on the end of the stalk, in which case in what mode should I be in to reset it please?. The reset button on the steering wheel? I know mine is just a reset issue as it failed whilst I was constantly trying to start my car with a defective starter motor. All that clicking and current surges caused it to go off-line. I disconnected the positive of the battery for two hours, nothing.
