As a mechanic and longtime Range Rover owner, I’ve had my fair share of experience with luxury SUVs.

So when Top Gear Magazine asked me to put the Volvo XC90 and the Range Rover head to head, I couldn’t resist.

After all, who better to evaluate the contenders than someone who’s spent years getting under the hood of luxury vehicles.

At first glance, both the Volvo XC90 and Range Rover are visually stunning, with sleek lines, bold contours, and elegant finishes.

But when it comes down to the details, there are some key differences.

The front fascia is dominated by the iconic “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights, while the rear boasts an elegant, tapered tailgate.

Inside, the XC90 is the epitome of Scandinavian luxury, with premium materials and plenty of legroom for all passengers.

The Range Rover, on the other hand, offers a more classic design with a rugged yet refined look.

The front grille is instantly recognizable, and the aggressive lines and bold curves give the vehicle a commanding presence on the road.

Inside, the Range Rover offers a first-class experience with handcrafted finishes, comfortable seating, and ample head and legroom.


When it comes to performance, both the Volvo XC90 and Range Rover deliver excellent acceleration, speed, and handling. But which one comes out on top?

The Volvo XC90 offers three different powertrain options, including a T5 turbocharged engine, a T6 turbo and supercharged engine, and a T8 plug-in hybrid.

Each option delivers impressive power and acceleration, with the T8 offering an impressive 400 horsepower, perfect for drivers that prioritize performance.

The Range Rover, meanwhile, offers a variety of engine choices, including a V6, V8, and plug-in hybrid.

The V8 delivers impressive power, with 557 horsepower and a top speed of 155 mph.

And when it comes to off-roading, the Range Rover is unmatched, with its legendary Terrain Response system that adapts to any surface.


When it comes to luxury features, both the Volvo XC90 and Range Rover offer an impressive range of options to enhance the driving experience. Let’s take a closer look.

The Volvo XC90 comes standard with a 9-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, a panoramic sunroof, and a power rear liftgate.

Available options include a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system, a built-in tablet for rear-seat entertainment, and an air suspension system for a smoother ride.

The Range Rover, on the other hand, comes standard with a 10-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, and a panoramic sunroof.

Available options include a rear-seat entertainment system, a Meridian sound system, and a four-zone climate control system.
